Won't you be bored?

Visiting ports is highly overrated

RUSS_RAFF_crossing.jpegQM2 is, happily for me, a bit “stuffy” compared to other cruises I have experienced. It is more formal and that carries over to the activities aboard ship.

Lectures are BIG aboard Cunard. On Monday, passengers had the option to attend up to five of them:

10:00 New Yorker Cartoonist Ben Schwartz: Keynote, “Funny Business Exploring the Cartoons of the New Yorker” in Illuminations Deck 3
11:00 Insights Lecture: Dr. Lawrence Kuznetz, “NASA—The Basics” Royal Court Theatre Deck 2
12:15 Insights Lecture: Robert Key, “Our Magna Carta—Death of a King, Birth of Liberty and Justice” in Illuminations
2:00 A World of Art Talk: “L.S. Lowry—An Unlikely Hero” at Clarendon Art Gallery
3:30 Insights Lecture: Gloria Barnett, “Ocean World” in IlluminationsWineClassMainDiningRoom.jpg

Music is also important. On Monday, October 8, 2018, these were the offerings for the day:
11:00 Line Dancing at the Queens Room Deck 3
12:00 Eight Bells in the Grand Lobby
12:15 Lunchtime Melodies with Pianist Ferry P. Bedi in the Golden Lion Pub Deck 2

9:30 The Jazz Club with the Mark Hodgson Trio in the Chart Room
9:45 Harpist Lara Szabo in Carinthia Lounge
9:45 Royal Cunard Ball in the Queens Room
9:45 Purple Haze in G32
10:00 Karaoke in the Golden Lion Pub

11:30 Live Music with Purple Haze G32
12:00 Dance Music for Enthusiasts in the Ballroom (more recorded music)
12:30 All Request Express with DJ Nick in G32

You get the picture.

During evenings, there are balls and parties. On formal nights, they are for those of us in the tuxedo set a fine timelarge_WorldClubMeetsWide.JPG

Sports? Well, there’s Foil Fencing Class, Shuffleboard, Social Paddle Tennis, a Table Tennis Tournament, Killer Darts, Social Golf, Deck Quoits and a Golf Competition.

Cards? Beginners Bridge at 9:30, Complimentary Gaming Lessons in the Empire Casino at 10:30, Intermediate Bridge also at 10:30, Low Limit Afternoon Seadays in the Casino at 1:00, and a Duplicate Bridge Tournament in the Atlantic Room at 2:00 competing with Social Bridge and Whist in the ConneXions Room at the same time.

Classes? Watercolour Art Class is offered twice, there’s a Birthstone Seminar (a sales pitch, really) and a Needlework & Knitting class.

Trivia? In one form or another it is offered at 10:30, 2:00, 4:15 and 8:00. My recollection from my Queen Elizabeth cruise is that this is taken very seriously with teams being highly competitive.

Bingo is at 3:00.
Like minded travelers have Catholic Mass or a Christian Fellowship, a Veterans’ Get Together, Solo Travellers’ Coffee, Masonic Brethren Get Together, Friends of Bill W. and an LGBT Social Hour. An interesting side note: The LGBT Social Hour was once known as "Friends of Dorothy." In a conversation with our new friend Mel I learned that he once commented to the line that since fear no longer grips those who come out as it once did, it was time to rename the get together for what it was: LGBT. You go, Mel.

The movie, “Gravity” with George Clooney, Sandra Bullock and Ed Harris is shown on the big screen in Illuminations at 5:00, 8:00 and again at 10:30. Your stateroom TV offers five movie channels and four more full time movie channels strictly in German or Spanish or French or Japanese.

For news junkies, the TV also offers 24-hour BBC World, Sky News, CNBC, MSNBC and Fox News.

The QM2 boasts the largest library at sea (9,500 volumes) and a game room with board games and the like.

The Entertainment Staff led by Entertainment Director Paul O’Loughlin has a goal to make certain that nobody is ever bored. During the voyage, there are ten specialty speakers and lecturers ranging from an expert on forensic dentistry to an astronaut and shuttle pilot and two actresses: Fidelis Morgan and Celia Imrie.
To top it all off: The Planetarium Shows in the Illuminations Planetarium (500 seats for movies but only 150 for planetarium shows for which tickets are required) and hosted Star Gazing events (weather permitting).

At your leisure you can participate in the “Maritime Quest.” Over 200 panels trace Cunard’s history throughout the pubic rooms and walkways of the ship. Audio handsets guide you.

B4 is a fan of the Canyon Ranch Spa. Besides the expected massages, manicures and pedicures and whatnot, here are Fitness Classes at 7:30, 8:00, 4:00, 5:00 and 5:30 accompanied by “Wellbeing Seminars” at 11:00, 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 on topics including burning fat faster, acupuncture at sea, “Ayurveda: What’s Your Dosha?”, Healthy Happy Feet, 5 Steps to Flawless Skin, Makeup for Mature Women and, of course, Acupuncture for Arthritis & Pain.

That was Monday. Later in the week my love loved Flower Arranging Class and Fruit & Vegetable Carving Class. Go figure.VegetableCarving2.JPGWatermelonPig.jpegWatermelonHead.jpegPineappleChicken.jpeg
FlowerArrangerClass.jpg I was overwhelmed and disheartened by the waltz class. My feet won't go.
WaltzClass.jpgMaybe I should join some friend on the sunny side of Deck 7?large_Decknappers.JPG
